Deputies association hosts candidate forum

Post on: 2011-11-02 By: admin

Local political hopefuls spoke to the Collin County Deputies Association at Spring Creek BBQ in McKinney Tuesday night seeking endorsements from law enforcement.
The association invited the candidates -- who are seeking endorsements from local law enforcement -- to speak to them and members of the McKinney, Plano, Frisco and Allen police associations. A panel of representatives posed tailored questions for each candidate to answer separately from one another while the opposing party waited outside the enclosed banquet room."I found it to be pretty informative," said Plano Police Association President James Harbor. "We try to make an informed decision when someone wants an endorsement from us. We were going to have our own forum, but the Deputy's Association was kind enough to invite us to theirs, which saved time for everyone."
County Commissioner Precinct 3 hopefuls Ray Eckenrode and Chris Hill discussed how their current professions would make them viable candidates to replace Joe Jaynes, who is not seeking re-election in the upcoming March primary."It would be an honor to contribute at the local level, it's my home," said Eckenrode, a McKinney-based commercial realtor who is seeking the Republican nomination. "With my financial background and detailed understanding of the area, I think I could contribute quite a bit to the county."Eckenrode and Hill both cited issues such as employee benefits and pay scales, law enforcement response time and keeping up with growth."I feel my skills in the corporate world will lend itself well in county," said Hill, a certified public accountant and controller at PBS Channel 13. "We are a growing community, and that puts a strain on our resources as we continue to increase. Everyone's asking and we have to make resource decisions. That's what I've done in the corporate world."County Court of Law No. 2 candidate Barnett Walker said he was running for judge because he wants to help the judicial process run more speedily and efficiently using his years of experience as a felony prosecutor for the District Attorney's Office. The private practice lawyer ran for the County Court of Law No. 3 seat last year and announced his candidacy for the No. 2 seat in light of Judge Jerry Lewis' retirement, which Lewis announced earlier this month."If I'm lucky enough to earn your endorsement, I would be the only felony prosecutor supported by both law enforcement and defense attorneys, which I feel is important to being a judge," said Walker, an Air Force veteran. "I believe in fairness on both sides and I will do my very best to find the right range of punishment appropriate for [each] particular case."Rumage also highlighted her multifaceted experience within the judicial system and said one way in which she would like to help law enforcement from behind the bench is by holding monthly night court for cases settling with a plea in order to help push more cases through.
"Being a judge has been a desire of mine since I've been an attorney," said Rumage, a licensed attorney for 19 years. "I've prepared myself by practicing in as many areas as I could and I think I can make a big impact on the profession."Texas House of Representatives District 70 candidates Scott Sanford and Bracy Wilson also spoke to the associations during Tuesday's meeting.Collin County Deputy's Association President Joe Wright said they will not make an official endorsement for any candidate until after the Dec. 12 filing deadline and said in the meantime they will assess the candidates responses based on the current needs of the associations."Our needs are, but are not limited to, loss of benefits -- we would like to see them restored to where they were," Wright said. "We understand times are tough and everyone is giving up something, but we feel like we've given up everything we can give up. We need additional funding for manpower because we are constantly working at minimums, we also need equipment. We also want to be paid on an equal scale to our peers and [fellow] agencies."
