Florida cities repealing gun laws
Post on: 2011-09-05 By: admin
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Several Florida communities are racing to repeal local gun laws before Oct. 1, when a new state law allows local officials to be fined for regulating guns.
Local gun regulations have been illegal since 1987 under a state law, The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported Thursday, but a number of cities and counties continued enforcing local gun and ammunition laws. The new state law takes the ban against gun regulation further by threatening to fine local governments up to $100,000 and hold officials personally liable for enforcing the old laws.
The newspaper said St. Petersburg is preparing to eliminate an ordinance against discharging firearms in the city limits. Brooksville, Tampa, Hillsborough County and a scattering of other communities also have old laws that are being removed, the report said.
"I think they went overboard," St. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Harmon told the newspaper. "I understand if they want to regulate state gun laws as the Legislature has the authority to do. But what happens to an officer who may misapply an ordinance? That seems like an awful lot of penalties for something that may be unintentional."
