First lady unveils hiring commitment

Post on: 2011-11-02 By: admin

HAMPTON, Va., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- First lady Michelle Obama said Wednesday the American Logistics Association and affiliates will hire 25,000 veterans and military spouses by the end of 2013.
The first lady revealed the commitment while visiting Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia with President Obama on Day 3 of his American Jobs Act bus tour, the White House said.
"The ALA's commitment today is the largest coordinated effort by the private sector we've seen in years, maybe ever," Michelle Obama said.
She said the ALA and its 270 affiliates know that veterans and military spouses represent the best, and they want them on their team.
The ALA is a voluntary trade association for manufacturers and suppliers of consumer goods and services to military bases.
The ALA's promise of jobs is part of the first lady's Joining Forces initiative to support veterans and military families that was established with Jill Biden, the wife of the vice president.
It will fulfill a quarter of President Obama's challenge to the private sector to hire or train 100,000 veterans and military spouses by the end of 2013.
