NEW YORK (MainStreet) -- First lady Michelle Obama announced Wednesday that the American Logistics Association has pledged to hire 25,000 U.S. veterans and military spouses by the end of 2013. The ALA is a trade association made up of 270 companies that includes Tyson Foods(TSN) and Coca-Cola(KO).

The first lady made the announcement outside the 94th Operations Hangar at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia, alongside President Barack Obama, who has been on a national campaign to rally the country around its veterans.
The Obama administration has unveiled a private-sector pledge to hire 25,000 U.S. veterans and military spouses by the end of 2013.
"As a country, we recognize that veterans have completed complex missions, all with high stakes on the line and enough variables to make most people's head spin," a White House spokesman wrote in a blog post following the announcement. "Our veterans are trained in state-of-the-art technologies, they've managed dozens, even hundreds, of people, and their leadership skills directly translate into value added to any business."
The Obama administration has campaigned for better job opportunities for veterans during the past few months. In August, Obama asked Congress to approve initiatives to help some of America's 1 million unemployed military veterans find work, including tax credits for companies that hire out-of-work vets, after revealing that the unemployment rate for post-Sept. 11 service members is 13.3%.
One of these initiatives, the Returning Heroes tax credit, provides up to $5,600 for businesses that hire unemployed veterans who have been out of work for six months or longer. It's a part of Obama's larger $450 billion American Jobs Act being debated in Congress.
